Second French-Japanese-German Workshop on Programming and Computing for Exascale and Beyond
High performance computing is a key topic that empowers innovation and competitiveness in order to answer many of the technical challenges we are currently facing that stand at a crossroad between big data and HPC. These systems are able to find actual solutions to the greatest struggles of our societies, in the fields of health and environment, in the industry and in the services we provide. China, the USA, Japan and Europe have engaged in the race for next-generation supercomputers: Exascale, which is expected to reach an unprecedented level of performance with a capacity of more than a billion of billions floating operations per second. This actually means: more than a hundred times the computing power of existing systems. But the path to Exascale is extremely challenging, on both hardware and software aspects, if we are willing to answer its inherent issues of power consumption, resilience, performance and operation. New programming paradigms, algorithms, languages and tools are required to answer this formidable challenge.
After the successful first trilateral exascale workshop in the French Embassy in April 2017, we organize a follow-up event at the German Embassy in Tokyo on October 30-31, 2018. The strategic workshop is a look back on the highlights achieved in the trilateral collaborations of SPPEXA and other previous exascale programs and an outlook on the remaining challenges ahead. In particular, we want to discuss possibilities for future trilateral funding initiatives. On the first day of the workshop, we also want to welcome representatives from the funding agencies of all three countries besides scientific attachés from the German and French embassies. The first day of the workshop closes with a reception at the embassy. The second day is dedicated to work on research sketches in small subgroups. Participants need to finance accommodation and travel. The workshop itself including catering as well as the reception is already paid for by DFG Japan and SPPEXA.
